It’s Christmas time, which means snuggly blankets, hot coco and quality time with your significant other. For those of us who would like our men to stick around in 2019, putting some thought into a Christmas gift can be crucial. However, we all know Christmas shopping can be tricky when it comes to shopping for your boyfriend, especially when you throw in the variables. You two may have just met and have a date right before Christmas. You may be getting comfortable in your relationship and you’re trying to figure out what to gift. Or maybe you’re rounding a year and your Christmas gift will show just how much you truly know your partner.
Regardless of where your relationship stands, a thoughtful gift really shows how much you care about a person. With that being said, since I can only share so much on what I think is a good gift for a man, I decided to go straight to the source and ask a few myself. I gathered Doug and three of his friends to give me some feedback on my inquires. For background, one of his friends is married, the other two are single and Doug is engaged (obvi.)
- DATING 1 MONTH
Gifting a month into a relationship can be difficult. You’re wondering if he’s getting you a gift, you’re not sure how much he’ll spend and you may not even know him well enough to know what he likes. My suggestion is to treat him to something like dinner or drinks, however, this post isn’t about my opinions it’s about the guys. So they suggested:
A Gift Card (Instead of getting him a generic Target gift card, try getting him a card to Footlocker or his favorite restaurant)
- DATING 6 MONTHS
I’d like to preface the following suggestions with the fact that I didn’t agree with any of the answers given. One of Doug’s friend suggested jewelry, which I feel is a little soon to be spurling (but that’s me.) Another guy said this is a good time to buy your man some shoes, which isn’t a terrible answer, but men’s shoes can get pretty pricey especially when we’re talking Nikes and Jordans…
- DATING 1 YEAR. This will obviously vary from couple to couple and at the end of the day you probably know your man pretty well at this point. The guys recommend that after dating a year you should get something thoughtful that shows how much you’re invested in the relationship. Examples include:
Jewelry(I would say to definitely use discretion here. Before buying him a chain ask yourself if he would buy you a nice necklace)
Nice shoes or a nice outfit
A drone… (random gift, but if your S.O. likes tech then ball out)
A weekend trip
- …YOU CHEATED ON HIM AND NOW YOU’RE BACK TOGETHER.
Now, I threw in this question just to mix it up a little. The guys really got a kick out of this question, as you ladies can imagine. So, the general consensus is you should get him:
Whatever he wants (their words not mine)
A fun date night that incorporates something fun like indoor go-karts
- …HE CHEATED ON YOU AND NOW YOU’VE TAKEN HIM BACK.
NOTHING (believe it or not, they said this, not me)
- YOU TWO ARE BACK TOGETHER AFTER A BREAK
The reality of relationships is that sometimes you just need to be apart. If you and your man are back together after a hiatus, regardless of how long, it can be a little awkward giving gifts. The guys recommended:
Plan a date that reminds him of the good times (i.e. go back to where you two had your first date and spark some positive memories.)
